Stop Using Your Air Conditioning (as much)

Whole House attic fan - quiet cool

What is one of the best investments you can make in your home to help save you money? Having a whole house fan installed.

A whole house fan will cool your home by pulling fresh outdoor air in through open windows and then exhausting the air out through your attic. Cooling the mass (walls, floors, furniture) inside as well as cooling the hot air and mass (studs, sheetrock, roofing) in the attic. The cooler it is in the house and attic, the longer it takes to warm up the next day.
Tip: Once the outside temperature is about the same as the preferred indoor temperature, open up the house and turn the whole house fan on for the rest of the evening. Cooling the mass rather than the air is the key to energy savings.

While some who suffer from allergies may not see an advantage in pulling outdoor air inside, it is actually a great tool for removing odors, off gassing, moisture, and other pollutants from the home.
Tip: Cooking something smelly or accidentally burn a dish? Crack the kitchen window and turn the fan on for just a few minutes (even in winter!) to quickly remove the smell.

Consuming much less electricity than a central air conditioning system is where the whole house fan shines. The lower carbon footprint also helps on your overall environmental impact. Use nature’s air conditioning to your advantage, especially with the amazing Delta breezes here in Sacramento.
Tip: Pre-cool the home in the mornings before work to help bring the indoor temperature down as low as possible. When you’re ready to leave- turn the fan off, close the windows (and drapes!) to keep the house as cool as possible on the really hot days.

Running your central HVAC system less will also reduce the strain put on the system. Extending the lifespan of the larger equipment investment.
Tip: If you have ceiling fans, they can help move the air in the rooms your in as well. Air movement on your skin makes it feel about 5° cooler than the actual temperature.

As you can see, overall the investment of a whole house fan offers much more than just another whole home cooling source.
