When you have a room in your home with a lot of glass exposure, no attic insulation, and multiple exterior walls-that is a recipe for discomfort in the hotter and colder months.
Take my dining room for example. It looks like a sunroom or an addition to the home, but it is part of the original house. It has two exterior walls, a flat roof, and backs up to the garage which means it is always over heated in the summer and ice cold in the winter.
About five years ago, I finally decided to follow my own advice and have our team install a ductless mini-split for me in this room. In the process the also eliminated the small supply duct that was running from the central HVAC system. Now I am no longer wasting that air for a room that would never be comfortable, and it gets distributed elsewhere in the house.
The outdoor unit is very compact and you can’t even hear it running unless you’re right up next to it. Using substantially less electricity than central HVAC systems and the ability to turn the temperature up or down when the room is not in use really makes them worth the investment.
Now we can enjoy using our dining room all year ’round with friends and family. And when I occasionally have to work from home I am not bundled up in multiple layers, nor sweating uncomfortably while trying to work. I can set the temperature with the remote control thermostat and the heat pump quietly heats or cools the room. I can even set the fan to oscillating mode in the summer to really mix the air for maximum comfort.
It is amazing the difference! Well, it isn’t really that surprising. I don’t know what took me so long!
