This time of year has everyone sniffling and sneezing if you live in the Sacramento valley. We pride ourselves on the diversity of trees but when it comes to springtime allergies it can be a nightmare for many (myself included). While we can’t control the air outside, the air quality inside our home is manageable.
Here are a few options for helping with the allergen overload when you’re at home.
Pleated 1” Filter
Rather than the flat fiberglass spun filters, upgrade your home’s central heating and air system filter with the pleated style. More surface area means more space to trap the pollens and pollutants. It also lets less air gunk pass through without restricting airflow.
Pro: Easily available in most hardware stores or online. Buy enough for the year and change every 2-3 months.
Con: Too high a MERV rating could cause restrictions on the airflow. Stick to MERV 11 or lower unless you have a variable speed furnace or air handler that runs slower. Unsure? Message us and we can help!
Honeywell 4” Return Air Filter
If you replace your filter in a return air and not at the furnace itself, this is a great upgrade. Even more surface area to collect the bad stuff without restricting the air stream which can be harmful to your HVAC system.
Pro: Typically only needs to be replaced every six months.
Con: Not available in very many sizes or applications.
Aprilaire Filter Cabinet
The premium option for maximum filtration. The Aprilaire cabinet is installed underneath or next to your furnace/ air handler. With many filters to choose from including standard air filtration, odor control, and allergies the versatility of the air cleaner can be completely individualized on your families needs.
Pro: Custom filter options for your specific seasonal needs.
Con: Initial upfront investment to have the cabinet installed.
